Well, someone did make a DVD about 2 months ago, but I do not know what is on it. You put the disk in, and if it still reads, you realise that just a month ago we dit a complete cleanup of all your data and that the backup is basically useless! Not to mention complete useless when the disk was damage in the meanwile as it layed in the sun for about a week.
Why are backups so damn important?
Well studies have shown that up to 50% of small businesses that experianced data loss, never realy open again and about 90% goes under within 2 years. Think about that for a while. You are doing a splendid job in running your business, balancing getting new clients, servicing the old ones and your cashflow on a knives edge.
Then bang. Your HDD with all your debitors and creditors dies. How would you get your money from your debtors if you do not know what they owe you? Yes, you might have some hard copies lying around, but that takes man hours to go through them and sort them out. Suddenly your cashflow is going down the drain as your are unable to get any money in. Your creditors HDD did not die, so they want their money as per usual. You where this is going?
Now you take your HDD to some company that tells you they will be able to retrieve some of your data, but it will take 2 weeks and a very big bag full of money. And after two weeks of waiting, they tell you sorry but it was to damaged and they could not retrieve anything. Now see where your business is going? All your hard work lost in a wink of an eye.
Yes, we do know that SME budgets are tight and the money is normally going to the part of the business that is bringing in the green. And yes, we know backups are generally just an expense. And if your pc never dies, or your building does not burn down, it will be an expense that is basically just thrown into the water.
Now ask yourself. Do you have shortterm ensurance at home? The answer is probably yes as most people realise that you realy can not go without it. Is the shortterm ensurance you have enough and does it cover all your needs? The general answer would be NO. Most of us are a bit under assured, but we are not completely without it.
The same goes for your backup solution. We understand that you might not have the money to house your system in a secure datacentre with 3 times failover systems and dublle backup servers ect, ect. But as in shortterm ensurance, you must have something. Maybe you make a bakup to your flashdisk that your received at some Beer convention. It at least is something.
You need to sit down and think about what you will do when you loose your data. Think how you will be able to run your business and how much it will cost your. Then think about your financial situation at of your business at the moment and work out what you are able to contribute to your backup solution each month. With that number in mind, go out there and find a solution that will fit your needs.
Come and speak to us and we could work something out to assist you with your backups. Remember, you could also be one of our clients and we do not want to loose you. Helping your business is what we do.
