What is Domain registration? Everybody list it as a service, but what is it exactly? Most people already have some kind of email address. Some have an email address at work and a personal one. You work address normally would be something like yourname@yourcompany.something. The domain that everybody is talking about, is the part after the “@” sign in your mail address. In the example above, your work’s domain will be yourcompany.something and gmail.com is your home email domain. Think of the domain as the name of your town or city that you live in, the part after the “@” sign, and your name as the street address that you live in.
If you give someone directions to where you live, you will tell them that you live in Main Street, Cape Town, South Africa. Your address is in a sense would be something like mainstreet@capetown.southafrica. Someone else might be living in Main Street, Johannesburg, South Africa and would be mainstreet@johannesburg.southafrica.
So basically, even though both persons might live in Main Street, they live in different cities and thus you will be able to find both of them. The same goes for an email address. The address consists of two parts. Your name part, before the “@” sign, and the domain part, after the “@” sign.
Domain registration is where you register a domain for your own use. A domain must be unique. That is why you sometimes get this funny address as most of the normal words have been taken already.
