Your outdated website is killing your business
My geyser has just burst and after I managed to switch off the water mains, and contain most of the water that is now gushing through my roof and house, I jumped on the internet looking for a plumber in my area to sort out my problem asap.
I quickly scanned through Google’s results and clicked the link of the business that caught my eye.
And then… I landed on this late 90’s style page with fonts last seen on Windows 3.1! I thought to myself, hell no! These people are not touching my pipes with tools that date back to the first industrial revolution!
And I quickly hit my back button in search for a business that actually made it past Y2K!
You and your business can be this plumber.
These days more and more people are researching products and services online and from the comfort of their own home, before they engage or contact that business.
You just have about 1/20th of a second to make a first impression about your business!
Here is the 6 ways your outdated website is killing your business
1. YOU DO NOT USE UP TO DATE TOOLS, SERVICES OR TECHNIQUES
If your website is old, people will think your tools services and techniques are old. I will definitely not go to a dentist with an old website as definitely do not want to sit in a chair where the doctor is using players that could come from my garden shed.
2. YOU DO NOT HAVE TIME
If your website is old and outdated, I might think that you do not have the time to work on your business. This could mean that you are good at your job and simply just don’t get your website, but if I do not know you and your reputation, I might think that you will not have time to service me or to fix my appliance.
3. YOU DO NOT CARE
If your website is old and outdated, I might think that you just do not care about your business anymore. Maybe you are close to retirement or maybe on the brink of selling your business. But you do not care like you used to.
4. YOU BUSINESS IS CLOSING OR OUT OF BUSINESS OR NOTHING MUCH IN GOING ON
If your website is old and outdated, I might think that your business is closing or that you are already out of business. The website might still be live as you are still using the email address or the hosting is on a debit order and you have not come around to stop it. Either way, I will continue my exploration about you.
5. YOUR ARE A FRAUDSTER OR SELLS GIMMICKS
If your website is old and outdated, I might think that you are some kind of fraudster or selling gimmicks and spent the minimum of time and money on your website.
6. YOU ARE CHEAP AND CUTTING CORNERS
If your website is old and outdated, I might think that you are cheap and cutting corners in your business. I will not be using your services as a penny wise is a pound foolish as they say! If I do use you and something goes wrong, I will not be able to get you back on site to fix what you have started as you can’t even fix your own website.
HOW DO YOU KNOW YOUR WEBSITE IS OUTDATED?
If you are reading this article, chances are that you already suspect, or know that your website is out of date.
Technology and the tools used to build websites changes and improve at such a rapid rate, that you need to update your website at least once every two years.
You can no longer think of your website as a one time expense. Rather see it as running marketing expense that should bring in business on a constant basis.
SIGNS THAT YOUR WEBSITE IS OUT OF DATE
When you open your website on a handheld device and you will have to scroll or zoom to read what is written on the website.
ANIMATIONS AND FLASH
Old gif animations that not much more than a sequence of images one after another. Some old websites were completely built with flash
In the old days, this is the just before y2k and just after, you can still stuff your website with all sorts of keywords and rank well or decent with all of them. Now it’s just another sign of your website age.
When you get to a website and some monotone media started to play without your permission. These days you will get to sites that auto-play advertisements but they are as annoying as the old sounds back in the day
BLINKING, ANNOYING SCROLLING TEXT
This was to go to method of getting someone's attention focused on your website. That red line of text that scrolls from right to left across your screen
PAGES CLUTTERED WITH IMAGES AND TEXT
Web design these days use a lot of white space to focus your attention only on the pieces of information that you want your visitor to read. Old design looks like a newspaper with almost zero white space
SMALL FONTS AND HEADERS
The use of small fonts and headers to crap as much information into a website as possible. Now we use bigger fonts and big headers to grab your attention
